Fix the Desk and Monitor Height First

Desk surface at 29 to 30 inches, monitor top edge level with your eyes and about an arm's length away, elbows near 90 degrees and feet flat. Desk depth of 24 to 30 inches is what a monitor actually needs. Get these right and almost any style will be comfortable to work in.

Put the Window Beside You, Not Behind

A window behind the screen creates glare, and a window behind your chair turns you into a silhouette on every video call. Sideways daylight solves both. If the desk has to face a window, add a light filtering blind rather than a heavy curtain.

Light the Task and the Room Separately

A task lamp at around 4000K over the work surface plus warmer 3000K ambient light for the room. Avoid relying on one ceiling fixture directly overhead, since it casts your own shadow across the desk exactly where you are working.

Design the Wall Behind Your Chair

That is the wall your colleagues see all day. A panelled surface, a shelf with a few real objects, or a single calm colour reads far better on camera than a bare wall or a cluttered one. Keep contrast low so background blur behaves.

Plan Six Sockets, Not Two

Laptop, monitor, dock, phone, lamp and printer add up fast. Wire a proper power point at desk height or mount a strip under the desktop, and add grommets and a cable tray so wires never cross the floor.

Take Acoustics Seriously

A hard, empty room echoes badly on calls. A rug, full length curtains and one upholstered or fabric surface make a measurable difference. In an NCR apartment facing a main road, this matters more than any decor decision on the list.
