Everything visible sits on top of two things nobody sees: the waterproofing membrane and the slope to the drain. Waterproofing Before Anything Else

Two coats of membrane across the floor, carried at least 6 inches up every wall and around 4 feet in the shower zone, plus a flood test held for 24 to 48 hours before tiling starts. Everything else on this page is cosmetic by comparison, and this is the only layer you cannot fix later without demolition.

Get the Slope and Drain Right

The floor needs a consistent fall of roughly 1 in 80 towards the drain, with the drain positioned inside the wet zone rather than in the middle of the room. Water that stands after a shower means the slope is wrong, and no amount of squeegeeing fixes it permanently.

Separate Wet and Dry Zones

A glass partition, a low kerb or even a level change keeps the WC and vanity area dry. In a compact Indian bathroom this single move does more for daily usability than any fitting you can buy, because you are no longer stepping into a wet floor every time you use the basin.

Specify Anti-Skid Flooring

Look for R10 rated tiles as a minimum on bathroom floors and R11 inside the shower. Smaller format tiles in the shower give more grout lines and therefore more grip, and they follow the floor slope better than a large slab can.

Size the Exhaust Properly

NCR humidity plus a closed bathroom is how mould starts. Fit an exhaust rated for the room volume, place it near the shower rather than above the door, and run it for 10 to 15 minutes after use. A window is helpful but rarely enough on its own.

Light the Face, Not the Ceiling

Put the main light beside or around the mirror at roughly face height, and keep ceiling downlights for general fill. Use IP44 rated fittings within the shower zone, and add a warm low level light for night use so nobody has to switch on full brightness at 3am.

Use wall hung fittings, since a floating vanity and wall hung WC expose the floor beneath and make the room read larger while also being far easier to clean. A large mirror across the full vanity width effectively doubles the perceived space. Choose a walk in shower with a glass screen rather than a curtain or an enclosed cubicle, keep tiles light and large format to reduce visual clutter, and build storage into wall niches instead of adding freestanding units that eat into floor area.
For floors, choose anti skid tiles rated R10 as a minimum and R11 inside the shower, in a smaller format that follows the slope and gives more grip. For walls, large format tiles reduce grout lines and are easier to keep clean. Vitrified and porcelain both perform well, while natural stone such as marble looks beautiful but needs sealing and regular care. Whatever you choose, spend on epoxy grout rather than cement grout, since grout is what fails and discolours first.
In almost every case, yes. If you are removing tiles you are disturbing the layer above the membrane, and existing waterproofing in an older NCR apartment is usually past its service life or was never done properly to begin with. Redoing it adds a few days and a modest cost to the project, whereas a leak discovered afterwards means opening a finished bathroom and often the ceiling of the flat below. We always include a flood test before any new tiling begins.
A straightforward bathroom renovation with new waterproofing, tiling and standard fittings typically falls between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹3 lakh in Delhi NCR for a compact bathroom. A mid range bathroom with a custom vanity, glass partition, concealed cistern and layered lighting usually ranges from ₹3.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh, while a large master ensuite with premium stone, imported fittings and a wet room layout can go beyond ₹10 lakh. Yes, and it is one of the more common projects we take on in older Gurgaon and Delhi apartments. A full renovation involves stripping back to the slab, replacing concealed plumbing, redoing waterproofing, resetting the floor slope and then rebuilding the finishes, which typically takes three to five weeks for a single bathroom. Layout changes that move the WC or the drain are possible but depend on the existing shaft position, which we check at the site visit before proposing anything.
